David Sobolewski was waiting for the ideal recruiting opportunity to come his way and there is no question that he found it.  That is because the 6'1 class of 2011 point guard from Benet Academy in Lisle, IL has verbally committed to Northwestern University after receiving a scholarship offer from head coach Bill Carmody today.  Sobolewski's commitment has been confirmed by Mike Mullins, the head coach and CEO of the Illinois Wolves.

Sobolewski had received scholarship offers from a plethora of mid-major programs after turning in a spectacular junior season at Benet in which he led his team to the supersectionals of the Class 4A state tournament.  Some of those schools that he considered in addition to the Wildcats were Northern Iowa, Bradley, Bucknell, and William And Mary as well as a couple of Ivy League programs.  However, it was the general feeling amongst those in the Sobolewski camp that high major offers would start coming his way before the end of the July evaluation period.  In fact, Illinois Prep Bulls-eye reported in a previous edition of its recruiting blurbs that a couple of Big Ten schools were ready to step up to the plate (http://ilprepbullseye.com/page39.html).  Northwestern was undoubtedly one of the schools we were hinting at in that update.

To stay that Sobolewski is an ideal fit for Northwestern is a huge understatement.  Above everything else, Sobolewski is as tough as nails and few players in the state have his competitive fire.  Simply put, he knows how to win, makes his teammates better and personifies everything that you would want in a true point guard.  He does an outstanding job of pushing the ball up the floor, has great court vision and awareness and if you back off of him is capable of scorching the nets from beyond the 3-point arc.

In addition to his basketball skills, Sobolewski is also a top-of-the-line student academically and there is no question that Northwestern's outstanding academic reputation and the opportunities that await Sobolewski in that regard played a huge part in his decision.  As a result, Sobolewski knew that it was a no-brainer for him to immediately accept Northwestern's scholarship offer.

Immense kudos go to both Carmody and Wildcats assistant coach Tavaras Hardy for moving on Sobolewski as quickly as they did and being able to get it done.  Not only did they succeed in landing a 2011 recruit who can undoubtedly come in and be a key contributor from the get-go, but they were also able to close things out and prevent other high major programs from entering the picture, which in all likelihood would have extended Sobolewski's recruiting process.

Sobolewski becomes the second class of 2011 prospect from Benet Academy to accept a scholarship to a D1 school, as 6'10 center Frank Kaminsky committed to the University Of Wisconsin last month.
